Title:  Close up detail of the bridge structure. The new concrete walking surface is at the right.
Description:  When completed in 1889, the bridge at Poughkeepsie was the longest cantilever span in the US and second in the world to only the great Firth of Forth Bridge in Scotland. By comparison to the Forth bridge, the structure of the Poughkeepsie bridge is incredibly light and spindly.

Title:  Puoghkeepsie and the Roosevelt Mid-Hudson Bridge from the Puoghkeepsie High Bridge

The Water Level Route
Title:  The Water Level Route
Description:  The former multi-track main line of the New York Central famed "Water-Level Route" passes under the Poughkeepsie Bridge. Although the two routes cross each other, the elevation change was too great to permit a direct connection between them.

Highland Station on the old West Shore Line
Title:  Highland Station on the old West Shore Line
Description:  During World War II, President Franklin D. Roosevelt would travel by train to this station for his sojourns to Hyde Park. The Secret Service preferred this station as the President's train could take the B&O and Reading lines onto the West Shore, a route the Secret Service found safer as it avoided the more congested Pennsylvania Railroad.
